RYA Powerboat Licence

The RYA National Powerboat Scheme has all you need if you want to skill up and become competent in power boating in the UK. Whether you use powerboats for leisure or work, or in connection with another activity such as sailing clubs or rescue, our RYA accredited courses will get you started.

Practical courses

The programme comprises of a series of courses, which can be complemented by a navigation course and other one-day support courses. Use them to increase your knowledge and confidence, or use them as a progression to the RYA/MCA Certificates of Competence, which are recognised by maritime authorities worldwide.
Most courses take place over two days using our comprehensive fleet of boats.

The RYA's National Powerboat Scheme

From the age of 8 you can take our Level 1 Powerboat Course
From the age of 12 you can take the Power Boat level 2 course. After completing these courses, you will able to drive a powerboat under the supervision of an adult.
From the age of 16 you will receive your full Powerboat Level 2 licence and go on to progress through the RYA scheme.

Powerboat Level 1

This course is an introduction to boating techniques and students will learn everything from launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer to everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

Assumed Knowledge None
Course content Launching and preparing a boat. Basic boat handling and returning to shore. Background theory
Ability after course Able to drive under supervision
Minimum duration 1 day
Minimum age 8. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate

Powerboat Level 2

The two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge required to drive a powerboat, and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It includes Close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.

Assumed Knowledge None
Course content All you need to know for self-sufficient poweboating at a basic level. Course includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat
Ability after course Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions: aware of own limitations and those of craft
Minimum duration 2 days
Minimum age 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued an endorsed certificate

Saftey Boat Course

The two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

Pre-course experience RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate must be held prior to this course
Assumed Knowledge Basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers
Course content Boat handling, towing, fleet management, rescue techniques for sailing dinghies, windsurfers and canoes
Ability after course Able to provide safety cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing
Minimum duration 2 days
Minimum age 16
